For the last two years, I have been working with several agencies in Berkshire County to assist the immigrant community. I am part of the Berkshire Alliance to Support the Immigrant Community (BASIC) subcommittee on education and transportation.
I have successfully advocated for changes in the Pittsfield school district registration office to facilitate access for immigrant families. These changes include updates to the acceptable documents families can present, enabling children to start classes immediately instead of waiting for months. Additionally, the registration process, previously conducted solely online, now includes an enrollment space at the Mercer building with multilingual support and access to computers.
As a result of these efforts, over 460 multilingual families now have access to a multilingual phone line to communicate with teachers and administration. An effective immigrant family liaison with a background in children and social work has also been established to help these families navigate the educational system.
I have organized and capacitated the MLPAC, (multilingual parent advisory council) to provide the Pittsfield school district with recommendations and insight into the needs of the multilingual families and find cooperative solutions to them and foment family engagement and capacity building.
For the transportation committee, I have been assisting the immigrant community in obtaining driving licenses under the Work and Family Mobility Act. This work has involved building and maintaining relationships with the RMV and the ACLU to collaboratively identify and solve problems. My efforts have included helping the RMV understand and navigate complex foreign documentation and addressing multifaceted barriers to services. Additionally, I have provided translations (60), manuals, (over 300) and classes to the Berkshire region over 35 sessions since July 2023.
I have built and coordinated a group of volunteers that manage communications, information, and services such as sponsorships for driving tests. This group now includes several nonprofit and community agencies like Habitat, Berkshire Interfaith Organizing, and the ACLU and I’m in the process of getting several churches and congregations involved.
