Skills

  • Excel: Throughout my career I have worked in many lab courses where we used Microsoft Excel as a tool that assisted in both computation and organization Along with the use of Excel in labs I had taken a class in Excel which introduced many different functions of the software that could be useful to sort through large amounts of data
  • Analytical Chemistry: Analytical chemistry was a lab-heavy class in which lectures and lab blocks were used in junction with each other to teach various industry techniques aimed to teach students how to analyze the chemical components in samples via standardized curves which allowed students to quantify the world around us Spectrometers, Mass Spectrometry, and various columns to name a few were used to obtain data
  • Microbiology: In microbiology we focused on culturing colonies using aseptic techniques Once our foundation was set, we learned various methods to identify unknowns by using selective media and/or stains
  • Organic Chemistry: During my time in the organic chemistry lab I learned how to purify compounds based on the characteristics we expected them to display based on their respective structures and charges As I continued through organic chemistry II my skills improved and were key to using techniques in green chemistry to yield predicted products IR, NMR, and TLC chromatography were used to help identify a product's purity
  • Biotechnology: Biotechnology required a number of high-skill manufacturing projects in the modern world of science Projects included PCR and gel electrophoresis that allowed us to genetically modify various organisms to produce regions of interest On top of simply manufacturing the proteins in a host system we learned how to use simple and learned techniques and protocols to test the protein's effectiveness through spectrophotometric measurements and ion detection and purification through various thought experiments
