My work as a Counselor for my local summer program has helped me to develop effective communication skills, and be able to successfully mediate conflicts between two or more leisure program participants. Recently my role was changed slightly, and I am now an Inclusion Counselor, with my main responsibility being to give extra support to a participant who needs it, whether it be helping to regulate said participant's emotions or ensure their physical and mental well-being.

Summer Leisure Program Inclusion Counselor
1 MonthResponsible for overseeing the care and safety of one or more children with diverse abilities.
Must follow policies and procedures set forth by the Recreation Division and the Town of
Barnstable. The Inclusion Counselor will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation
of their assigned individual/individuals.
Must work with individuals with diverse abilities in areas such as appropriate behavior in
social settings, recreational activities, basic care and skill development.
Must display strong leadership characteristics, communication skills and assertiveness as
needed
Familiarize yourself with your participants’ likes and dislikes.
Responsible for giving options to your participant who may be sensitive to some situations
i.e. noise in the gym may be changes to playground or a favored quiet activity.
Responsible for exchanging information about your participant with parents each day.
Responsible for
including your participant in all activities in some way.
Responsible for going over the daily schedule with your participant.
Responsible for finding opportunities to get your participant involved and make friends.
Always be with or near your participant to see any antecedents to conflict or issues and attend to them right away.
Responsible solely for your participant during the beach trips and you are not put into a rotation so that you can be either beach, water or both at any time.
Responsible for getting your participant ready for all beach and field trips.
Responsible for getting your participant ready for transitions by giving them a countdown.
Responsible for following all medical and behavioral plans for your participant.
Responsible for keeping lines of communication open between all staff.
Responsible for following all policies and procedures.
Must take the Level 3 Swim Test.
Responsible for updating your Red Cross Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.
Summer Leisure Program Counselor
2 MonthsResponsible for assisting or leading an activity, as assigned
Directly supervise up to ten (10) participants daily in the Leisure Program with general supervision of all program participants
Responsible for learning the interests of their participants
Responsible for recognizing and responding to problems within the group
Responsible for providing opportunities and experiences that promote success
Responsible for writing discipline and first aid documentation
Responsible for helping to develop appropriate group activities
Responsible for helping other counselors who are absent or focused on another participant
Be familiar with the Emergency Action Plans and ensure all children are familiar and comfortable with them
Responsible for cleaning up the facility or field trip venue
Must take the Level 3 Swim Test.
