  • Med/ Surg nursing requires general and at times, specific knowledge, of all forms and complexities of illness and disease whether it be chronic or acute illness.
  • Nurses must be able to apply skills and have the ability to adapt to complex problems while caring for the patient. The nurse is expected to apply her skills using a wide range of nursing theories, principles, and clinically proven interventions.
  • Nurse is responsible for the administration of all medicines, IV Fluids, blood products and PCA administered pain medication.
  • Wound care and pre and postoperative nursing care provided. Inpatient hospital nurses work with the hospital physician-based team. Registered nurses working under this hospital physician- based model are responsible for monitoring and reporting all lab values and radiology results. The nurses at this level are the “eyes and ears” of the inpatient hospitalist.

  • 09/05/2012-09/2013 During this period at Cooley Dickenson Hospital, I was offered and accepted a position as a registered nurse in the hospital’s Emergency Dept. The hospital underwent a union driven “nurse wide” restructure. The position was offered due to my previous ED work experience. I choose to work mainly on the Urgent Care side of the ED, floating to the main ED as needed. The urgent care side of the ED was comprised of 10 beds and was assigned one nurse and one ED physician.

  • Patients requiring a higher level of care were transported by life flight ambulance or helicopter to the closest Level I trauma hospital. Emergent care and stabilization provided during the interim. In addition to delivering care to patients in the main ED, nurses and physicians were also an integral part of the hospitals full time psychiatric (PES) department. The department is located adjacent to the main ED.

  • Supervised, mentored and instructed new medical technicians and nurses in their roles and responsibilities as medical team member during peace time, and times of war or conflict. Deployed from 2003 to 2004 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Also deployed as a medical assistance team to the country of the underserved country of Honduras of a military aid and assistance team in the US as part of a disaster response or if deployed outside of the US in support of other nations.
  • Peace time role was to ensure that the entire airwing maintained physical readiness at all times. The medical clinic personnel ensured that each members annual physical exam was completed and documented. The clinic performed annual physical assessment, laboratory analysis, immunizations, hearing conservation testing, eye examinations and bio-environmental testing to a base population of approximately 1000 members, including FAA pilot exams.
  • During multiple periods of unit activation to conflict areas the medical clinic was tasked with developing programs and strategies to role out and administer newly ordered vaccines such as small pox and anthrax. Member of a deployed team of medical personnel in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Southwest Asia 08/2003-11/20003.
